Thermal transfer printing is an efficient digital printing process whereby material - much like any other printing process - is added to paper. With thermal printing, a coating of ribbon is melted down so that it binds to the material on which it is being applied. This is in direct contrast to direct thermal printing where no thermal transfer ribbon is used in the in the process.

One of the main features of a thermal printer is that you can control the heat generation of each heating element by entering a signal that corresponds to a target pattern. This then develops the colours you will see on thermo-sensitive paper. Thermal transfer printing was actually invested in the late 1940s and the technology is still used widely by manufacturers to this day.

A thermal print head, a component of thermal transfer printers, is made up of a line of resistors. These resistors form a line of precisely controlled dots of heat, which are able to produce images on a material with a combination of heat-sensitive paper or ribbons.

Thermal printing is extremely versatile and can be used for anything from barcoding labels to ID cards, and even driver's licenses. An added benefit is that thermal printing is typically more durable than ink jet prints and better quality than impact prints. This is particularly the case when it comes to receipt printing where a thermal printer will be simpler than any other print technology. The thermal print head is the heart of the thermal printer and therefore it goes without saying that buyers should opt for the best quality most durable products.

The thermal print head ensures that all the heating elements are concentrated in one line so that it is able to generate heat by applying an electric current. Depending on the purpose of the thermal printer, letters and or images can be printed by synchronizing this process with the repeated movement of paper. At Gekko we can offer you a wide range of Thermal Print Head products which are extremely reliable and offer top-class durability.
